Description
When water passes over a dam spillway, the energy of the flow has to be dissipated to avoid dangerous scour in the natural channel below the structure. This can be done in many ways, one of which is the stepped spillway, which consists of a series of drops in the channel bed. At each drop, retarding forces are derived from the reaction of the steps. This publication provides details of an investigation concerned with the analysis, by model study, of the complex flow behaviour down stepped spillways, and with categorising the various types of flow which occur.
