Culvert design and operation guide supplementary technical note

While there is recognition that culverts present significant flood risks, there have been few systematic investigations in the UK of blockage risk associated with trash accumulation at culverts and other hydraulic structures. In response to this, the aim of the research presented here is to advance the knowledge base regarding trash screen blockage and to develop simple tools and methods for assessing the risks associated with blockage at culverts. This technical note is designed to accompany and augment those components of CIRA C689, which deal with the design, maintenance and management of trash screens located at culverts.
