This CIRIA guide provides practical advice for assessing and managing below-ground risks to land development from climate change and extreme weather events (EWEs). It is divided into two parts – Part 1 covers the current state of knowledge and Part 2 presents a good practice framework for managing and mitigating the projected impacts of climate change on geo-based risks. It includes diagrams, tools and case studies to support understanding. This guide aims to provide a link between projected climate change impacts – hotter, drier summers, warmer, wetter winters, sea-level rise and greater intensity of storm events – and physical effects. It aims to help and inform anyone who is required to understand the potential effects of climate change on geo-based risks and the implications for land development; primarily landowners, developers, consultants, designers and contractors involved in land development, those involved in regulating it, and those providing finance and insurance. It will also be of interest to asset managers, owners and legal professionals as it considers impacts over the whole development life cycle.
