Sea walls: survey of performance and design practice

In the UK, sea walls represent a substantial and effective investment as coastal defences against erosion and flooding. Many existing sea walls now require upgrading or replacement, yet there is inadequate overall information as to present performance and design practice, and future requirements. This technical note reports on the first phase of a two-part project intended to produce detailed guidelines for the design of sea walls for coastline control. It includes a review of current UK research relevant to sea walls, a summary for the design guidelines to be produced under the second phase and proposals for related research
